Theories Of Science
Every Christian faces questions related to Bible and Science in his/her school and college life. These days they face an increasing amount of interrogation even in their work places. Though this tendency intensified only in the last one century, it was predicted two millennia ago in the New Testament.
What is more, in 1 Peter 3:15 the Holy Spirit clearly asks Christians to face the situation. We read "be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear". This requires a certain basic minimum preparedness on the part of every believer. What is more, the verse says that this is part of setting apart Christ in our hearts because this verse starts with the instruction, "But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts:" This instruction came to my mind once again today when I read about the latest about the "String Theory".
Everyone has heard of the Big Bang theory, and related picture of how particles were formed, and how the Universe is multi-dimensional. Many theories are there, and the String Theory is one of them. They find it difficult to reconcile with the record of creation given in Genesis 1. This becomes all the more embarrassing when a learned unbeliever quizzes the shaky Christian. However, this need not be so. A bit of preparation can help almost any Christian to face the majority of assaults on the faith. The first thing to do is to distinguish between a "theory" of science and a "fact" or "law" or science.
A theory, everyone knows, is not yet established. Were that so, they would have called it a fact or a law. Thus as long as it is in the theory form, nobody has a right to use it as an evidence against the Christian faith, or against anything else. A good example is the "String Theory" of matter and of the cosmos. Very popular among theoreticians, millions of dollars were spent to develop this theory. Yet it is becoming clear that this theory needs to be abandoned. It was not a contribution to physics, but a hindrance.
According to two recently published books, The Rise of String Theory, the Fall of a Science (by Lee Smolin) and The Failure of String Theory and the Search for Unity in Physical Law (Peter Woit), it is time to abandon this theory. This is not surprising. Most theories die this way. A few of them are modified. A fewer still get developed into laws and facts of science. If a Christian keeps this in mind, he can effectively fulfill the Biblical command to give "an answer" to everyone who asks them concerning their faith.
People will keep using theories of science to attack the Bible. But the Christian needs to distinguish between the unestablished theories and proven facts. He should then take a stand for his faith because no established fact of science has ever contradicted any statement in the Bible.
