Set Free: God's Healing Power For Abuse Survivors and Those Who Love Them, Jan Coates, Minneapolis: Bethany House, 2005, 184 pages

Child abuse and incest are horrible things, and it is a tragedy that the expansion of education and civilization has not been able to control this crime. It often seems that these kinds of violences are on the increase, and there is a reason to think so in the light of aggressive campaign for pedophilia. The arrival of the net has only made things easy for this group of criminals, and going by the way things are changing, tomorrow it might even be accepted as an "alternative sexual orientation" and calling pedophilia criminal might become a hate-crime. In the midst of this turmoil one thing remains unchanged: the pain and agony suffered by the victim.
In a society where using even a technical term like "womb" was taboo, incest and child abuse was practically never mentioned. Many things were real, but they were there only to be understood and to be kept silent about. However, the increasing laxity with which even slang is used has had the side effect of making technical terms related to sexual relations and sexual crime more less offensive. In turn it has also helped many to voice their concerns openly either in the pulpit or through the print media. This has in turn created a better awareness among people about the hidden problem, though the solution has probably not kept pace with revelation.
Jan Coates has penned this book in the now-popular easy-read style with stories of a number of abuse victims and how they were able to find a solution in Christ. The style is gripping, and the book can be given to abuse victims with the confidence that it will get their attention. Since pain reduced by sharing, even when there is none to share with verbally, the book will help many. If you know of someone who needs help in this area of life, you can confidently place this book in their hands.
At the same time, the book has its limitations and one should not overlook them. The most serious problem is that the author has experience and insight but not research and training in this field. Thus the book is far from complete or sufficient. Words related to sexual exploitation are used, but they are never definte, nor are the boundaries mentioned. Thus a person who is not really facing an abuse, but who is emotionally unstable, can read the book and immediatly interpret his/her problem as abuse, while it is not that at all. The endnotes are sketchy and of no use and the Bibliography is less than what it could have been or what it ought to have been.
In spite of the limitations, the book can be helpful and comforting a certain segment of population, and Christian counselors and pastors can place this books into the hands of those people with profit.
